In 1861 the French colonial government opened prisons on the island to house political prisoners. The prisons were in use up until the end of the Vietnam War, being used by the Americans as a POW camp up to 1975. Begin your tour at the impressive local museum and continue to the oldest prison and the infamous “Tiger Cages”, as well as the American prison camp and the Hang Duong Cemetary. Your tour will teach you the captivating history of Con Dao’s past and will conclude at the same house where Camille Saint Saens composed the last three acts of the opera “Brunehilda” in 1895.
