The Victoria Can Tho has offered the best land-based accommodation in the Mekong Delta since it was built, over a decade ago. It nestles on the banks of the Hau River, one of the many branches of the Mekong. Fortuitously it is just out of Can Tho city – there is plenty to be said for being away from the industry andhustle of this busy provincial capital.

The Victoria Hotel is a breezy, low-rise complex with a tangible colonial vibe. Better considered a resort than hotel, there are 92 rooms surrounding a central swimming pool area which, in turn, overlooks the river. It creates a tranquil retreat after a busy day of sightseeing in the Mekong Delta, as your sun-lounger provides views across an expanse of busy river, as do the higher category rooms. All rooms feature timber floors, simply stylish decor and many have balconies.

If the Mekong Delta can be described as the fruit bowl or granary of Vietnam – then Can Tho, its capital, is the centrepiece. Access in to the town from the hotel is by boat, a charming commute for those wishing to leave the hotel and instead explore the local restaurants.

The Lady Hau is a classic rice barge, owned by the hotel, which they use for breakfast, lunch and sunset cruises.
